The name of Bangabandhu National Stadium has been changed to Dhaka National Stadium. This is the first time that an international stadium has been renamed in Bangladesh.
Bangabandhu National Stadium Renamed to Dhaka National Stadium:

The National Sports Council (NSC) has changed the name of Bangabandhu National Stadium to Dhaka National Stadium. This decision was taken by the Muhammad Yunus-led government.This information was revealed in a notification signed by NSC secretary Mohammad Aminul Islam on Saturday, February 15.
Built in 1954, the stadium was previously known as Dhaka National Stadium.
However, in 1998, the Awami League government changed the name of the venue from Dhaka Stadium to Bangabandhu National Stadium. This was the name for a long time. On August 5, Bangladesh changed. Sheikh Hasina’s government fell. Since then, Bangladesh has been administered by a caretaker government. It is headed by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus. The stadium’s new name is National Stadium, Dhaka.

More About Bangabandhu National Stadium
When this stadium was established in 1954, football was also played there along with cricket. In 2000, Bangladesh’s first Test match was played at this ground. Bangladesh and Pakistan faced each other in a two-Test series. In 1998, Bangladesh hosted the Champions Trophy for the first time.
That competition was also held at this ground. In 2011, the opening ceremony of the Cricket World Cup was also held at this Bangabandhu Stadium. It was at this ground that Sourav Ganguly won the tri-nation series by playing an innings of 124 runs against Pakistan in the final.

Now, however, football and athletics are played at this stadium. Cricket is no longer played. This is the ground of the Bangladesh national football team. Lionel Messi played at this ground on September 6, 2011. The stadium was renovated in 2021. Initially, this stadium could seat 55,000 spectators. After the renovation, the number of spectators decreased to 36,000.
