New Delhi Railway Station Stampede: 18 Dead, Overcrowding and Announcement Chaos Blamed

Another stampede to death. After the Mahakumbh in Prayagraj, this time at the New Delhi railway station. Uncontrolled crowd, rumors, disorder, many lives lost.

New Delhi Railway Station Stampede :

At least 18 people lost their lives, and several others sustained injuries in a tragic stampede at New Delhi Railway Station Stampede on Saturday night.

Among them are 5 children and 11 women while the injured have been admitted to LNJP Hospital and RML Hospital in Delhi due to injuries. The passengers have pointed the finger of complaint at the railways. Allegedly, confusion has spread due to the announcement of the railways. Due to this, the incident of trampling took place.

On Saturday night, around 9 pm, a rush started as soon as the train arrived at platforms 14 and 15 of the New Delhi Railway Station. Due to chaos, many passengers got hit near the overbridge and the escalator or moving stairs of platform 14. After that, the tragic accident took place.

What caused this terrible incident at New Delhi Railway Station Stampede ?

Eyewitnesses say that suddenly there was a stampede. People came running from above. Many were crushed under their feet. It was believed that many people died immediately. Some believe that this happened because of the railway announcement.

Speaking about the cause of the accident, Deputy Commissioner of Railway Police KPS Malhotra told news agency ANI, “The Prayagraj Express was standing at platform number 14, there was a huge crowd on the platform. The Swatwara Senani Express and the Bhubaneswar Rajdhani Express were running late. Passengers of these two trains were also waiting on platforms 12, 13 and 14.”

He further said“According to the CMI, 1,500 general tickets were being sold by the railways every hour due to which the station became crowded and unmanageable. A stampede took place on platform number 14 and near the escalators near platform number 16.”

The Railways has already ordered a high-level inquiry.

The Prime Minister is deeply hurt by this incident. He has made a post on his X handle. He has expressed his deep condolences to the relatives of the deceased. “Distressed by the stampede at New Delhi Railway Station. My thoughts are with all those who have lost their loved ones. I pray that the injured have a speedy recovery. The authorities are assisting all those who have been affected by this stampede.”

Meanwhile, the Railway Ministry has announced a financial assistance of Rs 10 lakh each to the families of the deceased, Rs 2.5 lakh to those seriously injured and Rs 1 lakh to those with minor injuries.
