To attract global EV manufacturers, the government has now reduced the basic customs duty on high-end cars priced above $40,000 from 110% to 70%. This move could make India a more viable market for Tesla.

India is currently the world’s third-largest emitter of greenhouse gases, but has committed to reducing its carbon footprint and achieving net-zero emissions by 2070.

Moreover, India’s growing middle class and increasing demand for sustainable solutions make it a key market for Tesla. The company has long sought lower import taxes as a condition for making major investments in the country. Musk has previously said that high duties were a major roadblock to Tesla’s entry into the country.

Musk’s postponed India visit in 2022

In 2022, Musk had planned to visit India and meet PM Modi, raising speculation about Tesla’s investment plans, including a potential factory. However, he postponed the trip due to urgent company matters, such as job cuts and vehicle recalls in the US.

This time around, it seems that the company is getting serious about making its debut in the Indian market.
